Measha in Maclean’s Magazine

Measha in Maclean's

To celebrate the release of Songs Of Freedom, Measha met with Maclean’s Magazine to discuss the new album:

Opera singers rarely get political. And the spiritual—the politically charged songs that brought solace and empowerment to enslaved African-Americans, a musical tradition carried on by the likes of legendary sopranos Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle—rarely earns the spotlight, much less radio play or stage time.

But that hasn’t stopped Canadian opera singer Measha Brueggergosman from seeking to further the art and history of spirituals in her latest album, Songs of Freedom. Her interest is hard-earned: She started to explore her own roots with a documentary in 2015, also called Songs of Freedom, which traced the 39-year-old’s journey from her hometown of New Brunswick to her past familial roots in Cameroon. It was there, in Central Africa, where Brueggergosman discovered her family’s link to the Bassa tribe and learned about the struggles of her paternal grandparents, who managed to escape slavery in the late 1700s. Brueggergosman captures these moments of self-discovery on the album and in a detailed essay that outlines her ambitions for the project.

Songs Of Freedom Release

The much-anticipated Songs Of Freedom will be available January 13, 2017 . It is the companion piece to the 2015 film of the same name that was nominated for 4 Canadian Screen Awards, which documented Brueggergosman’s own journey and connection to her faith, family history, and spirituals; a story of discovery from her Cameroonian ancestry, escape from American slavery and arrival in Canada.  Timing is everything and this couldn’t be a better time to share a collection of songs about emancipation, family, faith and discovery. As Canada approaches its 150th year of confederation, a longing to search for our roots and examine our historical paths seems quite natural.

Measha explains:

“My exploration of traditional spirituals is a way for me to challenge my classically trained mind. It has helped me to become a better musician. It’s dear to my heart. My ancestors were stolen from Africa and sold into slavery in the United States before finding freedom in Nova Scotia. The spirituals were born out of a time when my people were oppressed and needed to find a way not only to communicate with each other, but also to express themselves. The reason the songs survived so long is because of their immediacy. They have the universality of a mournful yet hopeful existence. They have strength.”

In recognition of Black History Month, dates will take place in February and begin in Measha’s hometown of Fredericton.
